There are many misconceptions about sunglasses. For example, many people claim that there is no need to wear sunglasses when the conditions are overcast.  Others say that darker tints help protect from UV rays. There are many other similar myths about sunglasses that can do nothing more than getting you to buy eyewear that is not as protective as you may think. Here are some of the most common myths that need to be explained to everyone.

  1. Sunglasses are Just Meant for Sunny Days

UV radiations are not majorly cut down by clouds. So it is wrong to say that you don’t need to wear sunglasses on cloudy days. If you are going to spend even a few minutes outside, you should wear protective eyewear. It doesn’t matter whether it is overcast or not.

  1. Darker Tints Mean More Protection

No it is not so. There is no relation between the tint of the lens and the level of protection it can offer. You can find sunglasses without any tint but still offering 100% protection from UV rays. On the other hand, you can come across dark-tinted glasses that don’t offer any UV protection. It is recommended not to wear dark lenses without UV protection because they can cause the pupils to become dilated. This can expose your eyes more harmfully to the UV rays.

  1. Wear Blue Blocker Sunglasses for more Protection

Many so-called experts on sunglasses claim that “blue-blocker” lenses can help block out the extra light waves that could be harmful. Scientific research studies haven’t yet been able to prove so. Many people choose yellow or amber blue-blocker lenses claiming that they provide better protection. But just like tinted lens, these sunglasses aren’t effective against the harmful UV radiations.

  1. Kids Don’t Need to Wear Sunglasses

Most people think that sunscreen is all that their kids need. The fact is that kids need more eye protection than adults. Sunglasses will provide additional protection. So make sure to get your kid a pair of eyewear that offers 100% protection against UV rays.

So if you are going to get yourself a pair of sunglasses, make sure to stay away from these misconceptions. You can choose whichever style or color you may like, but it is more important to ensure your eyes’ protection. So give more importance to 100% UV protection than tinted or blue blocker lens.
